Science showcase

Science showcase
Yesterday we did our Science showcase that means that all classrooms,1,2, 3, 4, 5 and 6  had to put experiments on the tables and when the bell rang we moved to each classroom like in a circle.

I loved it because it was fun looking at other peoples experiments and because I learnt something about it in Rm 4.
What I found that was interesting was In Rm 4 about tea. One cup of tea was yellow and the other was black or brown and i did not know that the yellow cup was cold and the other was hot because of the color.

I learnt that if you have a hot bowl of water and a cold one and if you put coloring in both, put your hands in both of the bowls and theres a bowl in the middle when you put your hands in the middle bowl you feel the difference of hot and cold! Try it at home.

I would love to do this Science showcase next time because Science is awesome!!

Mary Mackillop centre

Mary Mackillop centre
In the Mary Mackillop Centre at the second floor of the house I saw a chair that was sat on by Mary Mackillop. At that moment, I thought of Mary Mackillop right there. I can visualise her
waving at me and saying hello. I am struck of the old chair that it is still in good condition. Then, she is waving goodbye, I waved and said goodbye too. Can you imagine that! That chair is also there for 100 years!

When I saw Mary Mackillop’s picture I feel safe and happy that she is there. I wanted to talk with her about my life and her’s. But there can be another day I can visit the sisters home and maybe I can see Mary again! Maybe someday….

The blue whale

The blue whale
The largest animals ever been to earth are still living today. The blue whale is much bigger than the largest dinosaurs one. Everything about the blue whale is big! Even its tongue may weigh up to four tonnes. They also call to each other in big voices which can be heard over 800 kilometers away. They are easily the loudest creatures. Because they are mammals, blue whales breathe air. This means they must come to the surface of the ocean to breath. The water spout a whale blows out is not really water at all-it is hot breath and water vapour. Mother feed their young on milk. By the time they are a year old,the young calf may weigh more than 20 tonnes. They can live up to 45 years.

The wicked witch of the singing sands

The wicked witch of the singing sands
Once there was a wicked witch who lived across the land of the singing sands. The witch loved to steal children. On a village not far from the witches hut lived a henchman who had 3 sons he was worried that the witch might take his sons. The henchman started not to worry anymore so he made a tree house there only way up and down the tree house was a ladder.

One day, the henchman left his sons at the  tree house and said” when I whistle 3 whistles that means you know its me,lower down the ladder then let me come up.” They kept on doing this plan, until one day the witch appeared and said” “Oh hello boys, may I come up on to your tree house?”  “It looks simply beautiful can I see it?” But the boys knew what their father said and the witch did not give up, instead of going back home to her hut she hid in the bushes, and waited for the henchman to come home. Evening came and the henchman came home and whistled 3 whistles climbed the ladder. The witch knew what to do and she went home planning. The next morning when the henchman left the house and the witch jumped out of the bushes and whistled 3 whistles, the ladder came down. She climbed up and grabbed the boys to her hut.

When the henchman came home and saw the ladder was down, he was frightened that the witch got his sons. He asked everyone around and they just said, “ no.” “Maybe the witch got them.” He asked the elder man in the village and he said”please help me get my boys back!” The elder man said “beat this golden drum so you can walk on the singing sands and when you get to her hut break her wand then she will die.”

The henchman dressed himself as an old man and went off to the singing sands,  beat beat beat went the drum. The henchman reached the witches hut and the witch said “GO GO GO AWAY!”The henchman said” Oh! please, please spare me some food...” when the witch saw the golden drum she wanted it and said” Wait! I have some food for you! They went inside and the witch made the henchman some soup. As she was about to put some poison sprinkles she put her wand next to the cauldron.  The henchman saw his chance, he grabbed the wand and snapped it into 2. The witch said“no!” then she turned into dust. He saw his sons and grabbed them tightly and hugged them. They were so happy, they went home and the villagers cheered and clapped. They had a happy life and never had to worry about the witch never ever again!

There was a young boy who loved to act.
Once he slipped because he was too fat.

He danced and tripped on the way.
Loved to act,he was the stage rat!

Peace poem

Peace
Peace means no war and everyone is in harmony!
Peace looks like people working and cooperating
Peace is beautiful like the harmonious colours blue, yellow and white.
Peace sounds like laughter and calm voices
Peace feels like you are safe, happy and joyful! By:KC

Jobs

Jobs
A doctors diagnose and test,
Travellers go around the world and need to rest,
A librarian put stacks of books on shelves,
An author writes books and stories about fairies and elves!
A pilot flies planes,
An engineer works trains,
A riddler makes wit riddles
to make people laugh and giggle!

And that's why I made this poem for you to enjoy.

Computer

Computer
My favourite thing to do in the computer is to play games, search, watch,Do all sorts of things!

I like playing games on the computer because it is fun and also you can watch without moving, for example a TV and you are too lazy to go there, the computer is right with you on the bed and you can watch there!Computers are very good at saving your work, for a book it will just be lost forever, but for computer you can just save it in a file. You can do at least everything on the computer!

Things on the computer can be good, but sometimes it could be bad.People now use computers to hack and steal other accounts, passwords and more. Sometimes adds pop up and it can might trick you for example this picture:Sometimes it can destroy your computer,so don't believe ads like this. Also if you play online games people who friend request you and you don't know them and accept it,they can know what you're doing in the computer.Be safe online and don't believe pop ups.
Computers are extraordinary!
What do you think about computers? I think their great!!
BUT REMEMBER be careful around hackers.

A CLOSE call

Close call!

An asteroid passed New Zealand a few days ago, it almost hit the earth. NASA has satellites in space but could not monitor and watch asteroids.
It came to close about 40,000 Km away. It was the length of a football field around 20-30 metres long.
The asteroid has passed New Zealand at 6:00 in the morning.
If it had hit New Zealand, this would be a big explosion. What a surprising Shock!

Hawaii volcano close to homes

Hawaii Volcano close to homes

On the biggest island of Hawaii, there has been an eruption of a volcano near Hawaiian homes.
The Kilauea Volcano has caused a lava flow that is 250 meters per day to the homes, it could reach the homes in a week! At this day no one has been burnt or hurt from the lava. This volcano has never erupted for 31 years and has been flowing since June. I would be scared if I lived there!

My Prayer

My Prayer
O Gracious God I see, feel and think in your creation.

I can see the koru snake slithering up to the tree and the wavy koru leaves blowing on it.

I can feel the slimy koru snake and feel the leaves turning their heads into kuro patterns
I think that your creation is beautiful in all things, the leaves and the creatures are beautiful.
The movement shows that the snake is moving slowly to heaven with the leaves encouraging the snake.

The beautiful leaves are swirling like the wind.

We thank you O Lord for these creations.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers stone
Harry Potter are amazing books to read for 10 and older. In the first book,It tells about Harry going to his new school of witch and wizards craft.

He founds out that he is not an ordinary muggle,He is a famous wizard that can’t die against You-know-who/Voldemort. Harry and his 2 friends figures out that Voldemort is trying to get the Sorcerers stone. So Voldemort can live forever.

I rather read the book more than the movie because the movie is like a shortcut and the book tells you more. My favorite part is when Harry got his wand and his wand is from Voldemort, its very strange…
I love this interesting book and I think you should
read it too.

My trip to the marae

Te Tahawai Marae
We were at school going to Te Tahawai marae.
We jumped on the bus and we practiced the Mo maria song and we didn't even noticed that we were there already.

As we got off the bus we walked slowly into the marae, the girls were in front to do the karanga and the boys were at the back. A Lady was standing next to the marae and saying “welcome!” in maori. Then Mrs. Driver said “Hai re mai” in maori.

We had to take off our shoes because the marae was a sacred place and our shoes were dirty. Then we made a swap, the boys went to the front to sit, then the girls went to the back. A boy from our class got up and made a thank you speech and gave the 3 ladies a koru drawing.

After that we did the hongi. That is when we touch nose and forehead. Next we went to wash our hands the boys were lucky because there were loads of girls in the toilet. Then went to the Whare Kai, that is when we eat food at the kitchen.Next we do activities, first we do a drawing of the ancestors from New Zealand. The next activity was in the kitchen we did the poi and song dance and we did koru drawings.
It was time for us to say goodbye. We said thank you and went outside to put our shoes on and walked back to the bus.

I loved the The koru patterns and everything in the marae!Takapuwahia-photos-1.jpg (500×375)

The legend of Makahiya

This legend tells us about the origin of the touch-me-not (mimosa pudica) plant.

The legend of Makahiya

There was once a girl called Maria,a very shy girl, who lived with her parents, Aling Iska and Mang Dondong,in a small village. Maria loved to stay in her garden, which was renowned for its lovely flowers. One day, bandits raided the village, and fearing for her life, Maria’s parents hid her in the garden. While Aling Iska was praying to God for her daughter's safety, the bandits broke into the house and hit Maria’s Parents on the head. After stealing things in the house, the bandits went.

When Maria’s Parents stayed in consciousness, they ran to the garden to look for Maria, but could not find her. They searched everywhere and started to despair, when something pricked Mang Dondong’s feet. Both of them looked closer at the tiny plant closing its leaves. At that moment they realised, that their shy Maria has been transformed by the gods into the plant. They named the plant -Makahiya (Tagalog for shyness) and took immense care of it.

Ostrich

A flying ostrich

Have you ever wondered how to put the dead ostrich bone together?

Some people put a dead ostrich in a woolpack, and let the the flies go in and out. The flies eat the flesh of the ostrich and in few days time you only get the bones. It also kept in a paddock under a wire-netting cage to keep dogs off so the dogs won’t eat the dead ostrich. After a few months  there will be a pile of bones.

The bones will be kept in the museum and exhibited for people to see and study.
So they were kept in a museum and placed by a taxidermist  hanging from the ceiling. The children would have said “wow!” A flying ostrich!! What an amazed display.

Instructions

1. Call the museum to tell them that the dead ostrich will be placed in the museum soon after it has bones with no skin, feathers or flesh.

2. Bring the ostrich in a the backyard or a paddock.
3. There you will need to put it in a wire-netting cage to keep the dogs out , also put it in an old woolpack to let the flies in and out.
4. Later on after weeks or months there will be bones no skin, flesh and feathers.
5. Before collecting the bones from the woolpack, number and sketch the bones where they were
6. place the bones in the museum and it will be hanging from the ceiling.

The prince and the pauper

       The Prince and the Pauper
This is a book about the Prince and the Pauper.
Their lived 2 boys that were born on the same day, but had very different lives-- one is the pauper named  Tom,  the second one prince named Edward. One day they met and they looked exactly the same so they decided to change cloths for a while. But when they did they were trapped in different places.
I think this book is good for all ages to learn all about survival in different places, and how to learn good attitude. My favorite part is when they changed back there cloths and back to their real life.

My comic strip about heat

Characters: Coal,Rose and a Random person out of no where.

                                       Story

Coal: Its so hot! I can’t stand it!
Rose: Its because of the heat from the sun.
Coal: What is heat?
Rose: Well, heat is made out of molecules. For example   an ice sculpture and a match lit up with fire, guess which one has more molecules.
Coal: Um…the match with the fire?
Rose:Correct! The more heat, the more molecules.
Coal: I wish the air conditioner was on because its so hot, but its broken!
Rose: Don't be sad, besides heat is better for your body and it warms us up, but if we don't have heat everything and everyone will die!
Coal: Dont be silly Rose!
Rose: I'm not silly and dont be scared Coal as long if the sun is here we will be fine.
Also heat can be made in 3 ways Radiation,Conduction and Convection.
Coal: What is that? Rose? Please tell me!
Rose: Well first Conduction is heat from the air.
Convection is heat from the Stove or the pan
and last of all Radiation is from the microwave, it has heat waves to heat up food or other stuff.
Coal: Wow! Thanks! That is lots of information that I really needed to know!
Rose: You're welcome Coal, now you know what heat is!
Coal: I do know what heat is now.
Random person: HEAT, HEAT, YOU DO KNOW HEAT, WELL DONE Coal!
Coal: Thanks!
Rose: Where did he come from??
Coal: I don't know,lets get some drinks.
Rose: Sure!
Random person: Thats the HEAT everybody!
